Module 7 · Lesson 3 of 3
Three Playbooks: Bull, Bear and Sideways
Build a complete bull market playbook covering entry strategy, position management, and exit planning for both investor and trader profiles.
The Bull Market Playbook: Different Rules for Different Roles
A bull market makes everyone feel like a genius. Prices go up. Every buy works. Risk feels nonexistent. This is exactly when discipline matters most, because the decisions you make during a bull market determine whether you keep the gains or give them all back.
Your playbook depends on your role from Level 5: are you an investor, a trader, or a hybrid?
The Investor's Bull Market Playbook
Your strategy is simple but requires enormous patience:
Hold your core. Your BTC and ETH positions are doing exactly what they were designed to do. Don't sell your core during a bull market. The temptation to "trade" your core position is strong, so resist it.
Take satellite profits systematically. Use the staged exit approach from Lesson 4. At 2x, 3x and 5x, sell portions. Move proceeds to stablecoins.
Don't chase. New "opportunities" will appear daily during a bull market. Someone's token is up 1000%. A new narrative is born every week. Your job as an investor is not to chase every opportunity. It's to execute the thesis you wrote.
Build your stablecoin reserve. As the bull market matures (prices above previous ATH, euphoria increasing), gradually increase your stablecoin allocation. This is your ammunition for the next accumulation phase.
Know your exit levels in advance. Write down: "When BTC reaches [X], I will sell [Y%] of my satellite positions." Having pre-written rules prevents emotional decision-making.
The Trader's Bull Market Playbook
You have more freedom but need more discipline:
Trade with the trend. In a bull market, the dominant trend is up. Bias your trades long. Short positions in a bull market are fighting the trend, and the risk-reward is poor.
Rotate with narratives. Track which narrative is heating up and position early. When BTC.D falls, rotate some satellite capital into the emerging narrative leaders. Don't hold yesterday's narrative when today's has taken over.
Position size increases carefully. Bull markets tempt you to increase position sizes because "everything works." Increase modestly, maybe from 5% to 7% per satellite, but never go all-in on any single trade.
Use trailing stops. In a strong uptrend, let your winners run but protect your gains. A trailing stop 15-20% below the current price ensures you capture most of the move without timing the exact top.
Bank profits regularly. Every week, move a portion of trading profits to your core or stablecoins. This prevents the common trap of compounding gains on paper and then losing them all in a single correction.
The Hybrid's Bull Market Playbook
Core bucket: Follow the investor playbook. Hold BTC/ETH. Take satellite profits at targets. Build stablecoin reserve.
Satellite bucket: Follow the trader playbook. Rotate with narratives. Use trailing stops. Bank profits weekly.
The key rule for hybrids: never let your satellite bucket grow larger than your target allocation. If your satellite positions pump from 25% to 50% of your portfolio, rebalance back. Don't let a bull market turn your hybrid strategy into a pure speculation strategy.
Bull Market Danger Signs
Start being more defensive when you see:
- BTC up 300%+ from cycle low with no meaningful correction
- Extreme greed readings on sentiment indices
- New token launches daily with instant billion-dollar valuations
- Mainstream media celebrating crypto (magazine covers, TV segments)
- Non-crypto friends asking how to buy
- Leverage ratios at all-time highs across exchanges
- Your own portfolio returns feel "too good to be true"
None of these individually means the top is in. But when multiple signals align, it's time to be more aggressive about taking profits.
Quick Recap
- Investors: hold core, take satellite profits at targets, build stablecoin reserve
- Traders: trade with the trend, rotate narratives, use trailing stops, bank profits
- Hybrids: apply investor rules to core, trader rules to satellites
- Never let a bull market change your core allocation, and rebalance if satellites grow too large
- Have pre-written exit levels, because emotional decisions in a bull market lose money
- When danger signs align, get more aggressive about taking profits
Checklist
- Write down your profit-taking levels for each satellite position
- Set trailing stops or mental stops for active positions
- Check: has your portfolio drifted from target allocation? Rebalance if needed.
- Assess current danger signs. How many of the signals above are present?
- Review your stablecoin reserve. Is it growing as the bull matures?
Common Mistakes
- Selling core positions to chase altcoin pumps, when your core is your foundation
- Not taking profits because "it could go higher". It always could, until it doesn't
- Increasing position sizes as the bull matures, when this is the point at which you should be reducing
- Comparing your returns to others on social media, where their wins are real and their losses are hidden
Key takeaways
What to remember
- Write the bull playbook before euphoria hits, because the emotional peak is the worst time to make rules
- Euphoria trimming triggers: F&G >80 for 7 days, new ATH at F&G >85, mainstream media daily coverage
- Hard rule: stablecoin reserve never below 10% during any market phase
- Bull traders: early exits are the primary error in bull markets, so let winning trades run longer
Quiz
Question 1 of 15The Fear & Greed Index has been above 85 for 10 consecutive days and BTC just hit a new all-time high. What does your bull playbook say to do?
