    Dominance, Rotation and Altcoin Season

Use Bitcoin dominance as a signal for market cycle stage and alt season rotation timing.

BTC Dominance: The One Number That Tells You Where the Money Is Flowing

Bitcoin dominance is the percentage of total crypto market cap that Bitcoin represents. When BTC dominance is 60%, Bitcoin accounts for 60 cents of every dollar in crypto.

This single number tells you something critical: is money flowing into Bitcoin (safety) or out of Bitcoin into altcoins (risk appetite)?

    What BTC Dominance Tells You

Rising BTC dominance (e.g., 45% to 60%) means money is concentrating in Bitcoin. This happens when:

    • The market is uncertain and investors seek the safest crypto asset
    • We're in early expansion, so BTC leads and altcoins haven't started their run
    • Bear market, and altcoins are dying faster than Bitcoin

Falling BTC dominance (e.g., 60% to 45%) means money is flowing from Bitcoin into altcoins. This happens when:

    • Risk appetite is increasing, and investors want higher returns
    • Altcoin season is beginning or in full swing
    • New narratives are emerging (DeFi summer, NFT boom, AI tokens)

BTC dominance and altcoin performance move inversely: when dominance rises, capital is flowing to Bitcoin safety; when it falls, capital rotates into altcoins.

    The Rotation Pattern

In every cycle, money follows a predictable rotation:

    1. BTC leads first. Smart money enters through Bitcoin. BTC dominance rises. Altcoins lag.
    2. ETH follows. Once BTC establishes an uptrend, money flows into ETH. ETH/BTC ratio starts rising.
    3. Large-cap alts. SOL, BNB, ADA, etc. begin outperforming as confidence grows.
    4. Mid-caps and narratives. DeFi tokens, AI tokens, specific sector plays catch bid.
    5. Small caps and memecoins. The final phase. Maximum risk appetite. Everyone thinks they're a genius.
    6. Rotation back to BTC. When the cycle peaks, money flows back to Bitcoin or exits to stablecoins. Altcoins crash hardest.

This rotation takes months, not days. Trying to time each phase perfectly is futile, but knowing the general sequence helps you position correctly.

    How to Track BTC Dominance

CoinMarketCap shows BTC dominance on its homepage. TradingView has it as a chart (BTC.D). You can see historical trends, support/resistance levels, and rate of change.

    Key levels to watch:

    • BTC.D above 55-60%: BTC-dominant market. Focus on accumulating BTC. Altcoin season is not here yet.
    • BTC.D between 45-55%: Transition zone. Money is starting to rotate. Watch for which narratives are gaining.
    • BTC.D below 45%: Full altcoin season. Maximum risk, maximum opportunity. Also: approaching the cycle top.

Historical pattern: BTC dominance tends to bottom out near the cycle peak (maximum altcoin euphoria) and top out during bear markets (maximum flight to safety).

    Practical Use

Don't trade BTC dominance. Use it as a compass:

    • If BTC.D is rising: overweight BTC, underweight altcoins
    • If BTC.D is stable: balanced approach
    • If BTC.D is falling: your satellite (altcoin) positions should be performing well. Let them run, but prepare exit plans.
    • If BTC.D starts rising sharply after a period of decline: potential cycle top. Money is flowing back to safety. Consider taking profits on altcoins.

    Quick Recap

    • BTC dominance = Bitcoin's share of total crypto market cap
    • Rising dominance = money flowing to safety (BTC). Falling dominance = risk appetite (altcoins).
    • The rotation pattern: BTC first, then ETH, then large alts, then mid/small caps, then memecoins
    • BTC.D below 45% historically signals altcoin season but also approaching cycle tops
    • Use BTC.D as a compass, not a trading signal, because it tells you the market regime
    • When dominance starts rising sharply after a decline, consider it a warning signal

    Checklist

    • Check current BTC dominance on CMC or TradingView
    • Compare it to 3 months ago. Is it rising or falling?
    • Based on dominance trend, assess where we are in the rotation cycle
    • Adjust your core/satellite weighting to match the dominance trend
    • Set alerts for BTC.D crossing 55% (upward) and 45% (downward)

    Common Mistakes

    • Ignoring BTC dominance entirely and wondering why altcoins are underperforming
    • Buying altcoins when BTC dominance is rising, which means fighting the rotation
    • Assuming falling BTC dominance means BTC is failing, when it usually means the whole market is expanding
    • Not recognising that BTC dominance bottoming out is often a cycle top signal

    Key takeaways

    What to remember

    1. Rising BTC dominance = capital flowing to BTC (risk-off); Falling = rotating to altcoins (risk-on)
    2. Late bull market: dominance at cycle lows = maximum altcoin speculation, near peak
    3. ETH/BTC ratio rising = infrastructure alts gaining; a secondary rotation confirmation signal
    4. Dominance is a confirmation tool, not a prediction, so use it with cycle phase and on-chain data
