Cycle Phases and the Halving: Why the Rhythm Repeats

    16 min readUpdated

Understand the four phases of a crypto market cycle and identify characteristics of each.

The Four Seasons of Crypto (And Why Most People Buy in Summer and Sell in Winter)

Crypto doesn't move in straight lines. It moves in cycles: predictable phases of boom and bust that have repeated in every major cycle since Bitcoin's creation. Understanding these phases is arguably the single most valuable skill in crypto because it determines when you should be aggressive, cautious, or defensive.

The 1630s Dutch Tulip mania followed the same pattern. The 1990s dot-com bubble followed the same pattern. Every Bitcoin cycle has followed the same pattern. Human psychology doesn't change across centuries.

Phase 1: Accumulation (The Boring Phase)

This is the period after a major crash. Prices are low. The news is negative. Most retail investors have left, swearing they'll never touch crypto again. Search interest for "Bitcoin" is at multi-year lows.

What it looks like: BTC is trading in a tight range, often 70-85% below its previous all-time high. Volume is low. Nobody on your WhatsApp group is talking about crypto. Media articles say "Bitcoin is dead" (this has been declared over 400 times).

Who's buying: Smart money, meaning institutional investors, long-term holders, and experienced investors who've seen cycles before. They're buying quietly while everyone else has given up.

What you should do: This is the best time to buy. Prices are depressed, fear is maximum, and the risk-reward is most favourable. DCA aggressively into your core positions (BTC, ETH). Build your watchlist. Complete your research. This is preparation season.

The emotion: Disbelief, apathy, boredom. Most people miss accumulation because nothing exciting is happening.

Retail investors habitually buy at euphoria (peak price, peak sentiment) and sell during the reset trough, the exact opposite of profitable cycle behaviour.

Phase 2: Expansion (The Smart Money Phase)

Prices start rising steadily. Not explosively, just a consistent uptrend that starts attracting attention. Bitcoin breaks above key resistance levels. Trading volume increases. Early adopters and crypto-native investors start talking again.

What it looks like: BTC is up 100-200% from its cycle low but still below the previous all-time high. Quality altcoins start outperforming. DeFi TVL and on-chain activity begin recovering.

Who's buying: Experienced retail investors returning. Crypto funds deploying capital. Some mainstream media coverage begins.

What you should do: Continue DCA into core. Start deploying satellite positions based on your research. This is where your watchlist and CMC Snapshots pay off, because you've already identified what to buy.

The emotion: Cautious optimism. "Maybe this time it's real." People who bought during accumulation feel validated but still nervous.

Each of the four market cycle phases has distinct sentiment, media, and price characteristics: recognising which phase you are in prevents buying euphoria and selling accumulation.

Phase 3: Euphoria (The Danger Phase)

Prices go vertical. Bitcoin hits new all-time highs. Altcoins pump 500-5000%. Your Uber driver asks about crypto. Your aunt wants to know how to buy Dogecoin. Every Telegram group is celebrating.

What it looks like: BTC at new ATH, dominance falling as money rotates into altcoins. New tokens launching daily with billion-dollar valuations. NFTs, memecoins, and celebrity tokens everywhere. Everyone is a genius.

Who's buying: Retail FOMO, meaning people who saw gains on social media and are buying at the top. This is maximum greed, maximum leverage, maximum risk.

What you should do: Start taking profits. Slowly. This is the hardest thing in crypto: selling while everything is going up. But euphoria doesn't last forever. Start moving satellite gains into stablecoins. Keep your core, but trim satellites that have hit your profit targets.

The emotion: Greed, overconfidence, invincibility. "This time is different." (It never is.)

Phase 4: Reset (The Pain Phase)

The crash. Prices drop 50-80% from the peak. Leveraged positions get liquidated. Projects fail. Exchanges collapse (FTX in 2022). The same people who called you a genius now call crypto a scam.

What it looks like: Cascading liquidations, fear headlines, project failures, exchange withdrawals halted. BTC drops 50-80%. Altcoins drop 80-99%. Memecoins go to zero.

Who's selling: Everyone who bought during euphoria. Leveraged traders getting liquidated. Projects selling treasury to survive. VCs selling unlocked tokens.

What you should do: If you took profits during euphoria, you have stablecoins to deploy. Start building your accumulation plan for the next cycle. If you didn't take profits, learn the lesson and survive. Don't sell at the bottom. Don't add leverage. Just hold your core and wait.

The emotion: Fear, panic, anger, regret. "I should have sold at the top."

    The Timeline

Historically, crypto cycles have loosely followed a 4-year pattern tied to Bitcoin halvings:

    • 2012 halving → 2013 bull → 2014-2015 bear → accumulation
    • 2016 halving → 2017 bull → 2018-2019 bear → accumulation
    • 2020 halving → 2021 bull → 2022-2023 bear → accumulation
    • 2024 halving → cycle in progress

This doesn't mean every cycle will be exactly 4 years. But the pattern has been remarkably consistent.

    Quick Recap

    • Crypto moves in four phases: accumulation, expansion, euphoria, reset
    • Each phase has a dominant emotion: boredom, optimism, greed, fear
    • Most people buy during euphoria (worst time) and sell during reset (second worst time)
    • Smart money buys during accumulation and sells during euphoria
    • The cycle has roughly followed a 4-year pattern tied to Bitcoin halvings
    • Understanding which phase you're in changes every decision you make

    Checklist

    • Identify which phase the current market is in based on the descriptions above
    • Look at BTC's price relative to its previous ATH. What does that suggest?
    • Check social media sentiment. Is it apathy, cautious optimism, euphoria, or fear?
    • Adjust your strategy to match the current phase
    • Write down: "When euphoria hits, I will start taking profits at these levels: ___"

    Common Mistakes

    • Buying during euphoria because it feels safe, on the logic that the crowd is buying, so it must be right
    • Selling during reset because it feels like the end. It isn't; it's the start of the next cycle
    • Thinking "this time is different" during euphoria, when the exact same words were said in 2017 and 2021
    • Not having a plan for each phase, because deciding in the moment means deciding emotionally

    Key takeaways

    What to remember

    1. Four phases: Accumulation (max fear) → Expansion → Euphoria (max greed) → Reset (bear)
    2. Buy most aggressively during Accumulation; trim progressively during Euphoria
    3. Cycle timing is approximate, and being right about phase is more valuable than predicting exact prices
    4. Euphoria signals: mainstream media, relatives asking, NFT/meme coin dominance, F&G consistently >80
