    Breakout and Reversal Playbooks

    16 min readUpdated

Learn the resistance breakout playbook: entering when price decisively breaks above a key resistance level with volume confirmation.

    Goal

Master the resistance breakout setup to capture the beginning of new trend legs, while avoiding the more common false breakouts.

    Mistake This Prevents

Entering every price move above resistance and repeatedly getting trapped by false breakouts that immediately reverse, because you did not require volume confirmation.

Breakout: Volume is the Essential FilterRESISTANCELow Volume BreakoutVolume65% of these FAIL✗High Volume Breakout (2×)2×VolumeGENUINE✓
Without a volume filter, 65% of apparent resistance breakouts are false: price briefly crosses resistance then falls back below. A genuine breakout requires at least 2× average volume on the breakout candle. High volume signals institutional participation, meaning the move has genuine buying pressure behind it rather than just a thin, low-liquidity drift through resistance.

    Core Concepts

The Setup Price has been consolidating below a resistance level and breaks above it on high volume, signalling a shift in supply/demand balance.

    Entry Conditions (ALL required)

    1. Resistance level: 3+ touches on daily chart (well-defined)
    2. Breakout candle: Daily close above resistance (not just a wick)
    3. Volume: Breakout candle volume ≥ 2× the 20-day average
    4. HTF bias: Bullish (or neutral, since breakouts can shift neutral to bullish)
    5. Momentum: RSI ≥ 50 on breakout candle (momentum supporting the move)

Two Entry Methods Method A (Aggressive): Enter on the breakout candle close. Captures more of the move but higher risk of false breakout Method B (Conservative): Wait for a retest of the broken resistance (now support). Lower risk, slightly delayed entry

Recommendation: Method B for most traders, especially in choppy markets

    Stop-Loss

    • Method A stop: Below the breakout candle low
    • Method B stop: Below the retest candle low (closer to entry = better R:R)

Why Most Breakouts Fail ~65% of breakouts are false breakouts. The key filter is volume. Without 2× average volume, the probability of a false breakout is extremely high.

Method A vs Method B: Breakout EntryMethod A: Enter on Breakout CandleRESISTANCEENTRY (A)at breakout closeStop A (wider)Higher risk, wider stop, lower R:RMethod B: Enter on RetestRESISTANCE → SUPPORTENTRY (B)at retest of levelStop B (tighter)Lower risk, tighter stop, better R:R
Method A enters on the breakout candle close, valid but carries a wider stop and lower R:R because entry is at a high price. Method B waits for price to pull back to the former resistance level, which now acts as support, for a retest confirmation entry. This gives a tighter stop, better R:R, and more certainty that the level is holding. Method B is lower risk despite entering later.

    Example Walk-Through

Setup: BTC breaking above ₹27.5L resistance (October 23, 2023)

    • 3+ touches at ₹27.5L
    • Breakout candle: Daily close at ₹28.1L
    • Volume: 3.2× 20-day average
    • HTF: Bullish
    • RSI: 62
    • Method B entry: Retest to ₹27.3L on October 26 (bounced from resistance-turned-support)
    • Stop: ₹26.5L (below retest candle low)
    • TP: ₹35L (next major resistance)
    • R:R: ₹7.7L / ₹0.8L = 9.6:1

    Checklist

    • Volume confirmed at 2× average before entry
    • Daily body close above resistance (not wick)
    • Method B (retest entry) preferred for better risk management

    Common Mistakes

    • Entering on the first candle that touches resistance (before the close confirmation)
    • Ignoring volume and entering every resistance test
    • Not having a retest entry plan, and so missing the lower-risk Method B entry

    Fedha Tool Tie-in

FedhaAcademy's Breakout Validator confirms when all five conditions are met. The alert includes: "Breakout confirmed" or "Breakout unconfirmed (low volume)" with the volume ratio shown.

    Key takeaways

    What to remember

    1. 65% of breakouts fail, so volume confirmation (2× average) is the essential filter.
    2. Breakout requires a daily body close above resistance, and wicks don't count.
    3. Method B (retest entry) offers lower risk and better R:R than entering on the breakout candle.
    4. RSI ≥ 50 confirms momentum supports the breakout direction.
