    Going Live: The Transition Protocol

    16 min readUpdated

Define the exact protocol for transitioning from paper trading to live trading, including minimum capital, phased exposure, and the 30-day review milestone.

    Goal

Execute the transition from paper to live trading in a way that protects capital while allowing genuine learning with real stakes.

    Mistake This Prevents

Going live with too much capital on the first day, taking an outsized loss due to the emotional difference between paper and real money, and abandoning your strategy entirely.

The ramp-up protocol solves the emotional gap problem by incrementally introducing real-money pressure while keeping risk exposure minimal. Month 1 limits exposure to one setup, two assets, two trades, and 0.5% risk, small enough that losses are learning costs, not financial setbacks. Each stage increase requires sustained performance, not just time passing.

    The Phased Transition Protocol

    Phase 1: Minimum Live Capital

    • Start with the smallest amount that makes execution decisions feel real
    • Recommended: 20% of your planned trading portfolio
    • Example: If planning to trade with ₹5L eventually, start with ₹1L
    • All position sizing calculations remain based on the ₹1L account (1% = ₹1,000 risk)

Phase 2: Month 1 Rules (Restrictive)

    • Only PB1 (EMA Pullback) on BTC and ETH
    • Maximum 2 open trades simultaneously
    • Risk per trade: 0.5% (half of normal)
    • No PB3, PB4, or PB5 until process compliance ≥ 9/10 on 10 live trades
    • Mandatory 30-minute break after every loss

Phase 3: Month 1 End Review After 30 days and minimum 10 live trades, review:

    1. Process score average (target: ≥ 8/10)
    2. Stop compliance (target: 100%)
    3. Emotional management (any revenge trades? FOMO entries?)
    4. Net P&L (secondary to process, but note if it is positive)

If all criteria met: Graduate to Phase 4 (normal live trading with full playbook) If not: Another 30 days at Phase 3 rules with specific focus on the failing criteria

    Phase 4: Full Live Trading

    • All five playbooks available based on market condition
    • 1% risk per trade
    • Maximum 5 concurrent trades
    • Three-level risk framework active
    • Monthly review cycle with go/no-go for scaling

    Scaling Rule

    • Increase to planned full portfolio size only after three consecutive profitable months
    • Each month must also show process score ≥ 8/10 average
    • Scaling before meeting these criteria is emotion-driven, not merit-driven
The Emotional GapIdentical setup, completely different execution depending on whether money is realThe GapPaper Trade✓Wait for setup trigger calmly✓Enter at pre-planned level✓Stop placed, walk away✓Hold to target, no interventionCalm. Objective. Rule-following.Same Trade: Real Money!FOMO: enters early, no trigger!Chases price above plan level!Moves stop "just this once"!Exits early on small dip (fear)Emotional. Reactive. Rule-breaking.
The emotional gap explains why paper trading performance does not automatically transfer to live trading. The setup is identical, the analysis is identical, but real money activates fear and greed circuits that override the rational decision-making built during paper trading. The ramp-up protocol bridges this gap by introducing real-money stakes gradually, allowing the emotional regulation skills to develop alongside the analytical ones.

    Checklist

    • Phase 1 capital determined and separate account opened
    • Month 1 restrictive rules written into playbook
    • 30-day review date scheduled in calendar

    Common Mistakes

    • Starting with full capital immediately (too much emotional pressure)
    • Not reducing to 0.5% risk per trade in Month 1 (emotional responses to losses are much stronger with real money)
    • Skipping to Phase 4 after 2 good live trades without completing the review

FedhaAcademy's Live Trading Phase Tracker guides you through each phase with checklists. The app unlocks each new phase's playbooks only after the previous phase's criteria are met and confirmed.

    Key takeaways

    What to remember

    1. Start live trading with 20% of planned capital at 0.5% risk, because the emotional difference from paper is significant.
    2. Month 1: PB1 only on BTC/ETH, maximum 2 trades, 0.5% risk. Restrictive rules protect capital during the adjustment period.
    3. Scale to full capital only after three consecutive profitable months with ≥ 8/10 process scores.
    4. The transition protocol prevents a single bad month from ending your trading career before it begins.
