Module 15 · Lesson 1 of 3
The Four-Week Paper Programme
Understand the purpose of paper trading and why skipping it is the most common reason traders blow their first real account.
Goal
Establish the mindset that paper trading is not practice. It is a prerequisite to live trading, and every lesson skipped in paper trading will be paid for in real money.
Mistake This Prevents
Skipping paper trading with the rationalisation "it is not real money so it doesn't matter", then losing 30% of a real account in the first two weeks because execution habits were never built.
Core Concepts
What Paper Trading Actually Tests Paper trading is not about practising market analysis. It is about practising execution discipline:
- Following your pre-trade checklist consistently
- Placing stops immediately upon entry (not "later")
- Sizing positions correctly per the formula
- Resisting FOMO entries and revenge trades
- Logging every trade within 24 hours
What Paper Trading Cannot Test
- Emotional responses to real monetary loss (you feel nothing losing ₹5,000 on paper)
- The specific anxiety of watching real capital decline
- The physical urge to press a button under pressure
This is why paper trading is a prerequisite, not a substitute. It builds the mechanical habits before real money emotions interfere.
The Four-Week Paper Trading Programme
- Week 1: Execute only Playbook 1 (EMA Pullback), one setup at a time
- Week 2: Add Playbook 2 (Support Bounce)
- Week 3: Add Playbooks 3 and 4 (Breakout and Compression)
- Week 4: Use all five playbooks based on market conditions
- Minimum: 10 paper trades completed before transitioning to live
Paper Trading Requirements
- Use a real platform with real prices: an exchange testnet, TradingView Paper Trading, or Deltix
- Same position sizes as live trading (calculate correctly, even if not real money)
- Same pre-trade checklist (every item, no shortcuts)
- Same journal entries (every field)
- No "restarting". If you blow the paper account, treat it as a lesson
Success Criteria for Going Live Before trading with real money, achieve:
- Process score ≥ 8/10 average over 10 paper trades
- All stops placed immediately upon entry (100% compliance)
- R:R ≥ 2:1 on all 10 trades (selection discipline)
- No FOMO or revenge trades in the 10 entries
- Journal completed for all 10 trades
Checklist
- Paper trading platform set up (an exchange testnet or TradingView)
- Same starting capital as your planned live portfolio
- Week 1 focus: Playbook 1 only
Common Mistakes
- Treating paper trading casually (taking trades you would never take with real money)
- Restarting the paper account after bad trades ("doesn't count")
- Transitioning to live before meeting all five success criteria
Fedha Tool Tie-in
FedhaAcademy's Paper Trading Tracker monitors your process compliance automatically. It tracks stop placement timing, position size accuracy, R:R, and trade journal completion rate, and generates a "Go Live" readiness score.
Key takeaways
What to remember
- Paper trading builds mechanical execution habits before real-money emotions interfere.
- Success criteria before going live: 8/10 avg process score, 100% stop compliance, R:R ≥ 2:1 on 10+ trades.
- Never restart the paper account after losses. Treat them identically to real losses.
- Paper trading tests execution discipline, not market analysis skill.
