Propulsion Block- refined institutional buying order
2 min read14 January 202638 reads
Propulsion Block is a refined institutional price action concept. It is essentially an "Order Block that forms off another Order Block." While standard order blocks represent initial accumulation or distribution, a propulsion block acts as a secondary catalyst that validates and "propels" the price further in the established direction.
Understanding the Mechanics
A propulsion block is created when the price retraces into a previously established Order Block (OB). Instead of simply bouncing, a specific candle (the propulsion candle) trades into that OB and then immediately reacts with strong displacement away from it. This reaction creates a new, highly sensitive zone.
The "propulsion" occurs because the market has successfully re-tested institutional interest and is now ready to move aggressively toward the next liquidity pool.
Key Characteristics and Rules
To identify a high-probability propulsion block, ICT traders look for several specific criteria:
The Origin: It must be a candle that has traded into a pre-existing, valid Order Block.
The Reaction: The price must drive away from the zone with speed and momentum, often leaving a Fair Value Gap (FVG) behind.
The Mean Threshold: One of the most critical rules is that a valid propulsion block should not see price close beyond its Mean Threshold (50% level). If the price trades deeply through the middle of the propulsion candle's body, the setup is often considered invalidated.
The Sensitivity: The opening price of the propulsion block is extremely sensitive. Traders often look for entries right at the open or at the 50% retracement of the candle body.
Why it works,
The propulsion block is a signature of Smart Money to re-engaging with the markets. By the time when propulsion block forms, the market trend usually well defined. It provides a high probability confirmation for traders who missed the initial order block entry. Basically a Second chance to join a trend.
