Footprints of big players (SMC)

Smart Money Concepts (SMC) is a trading framework that suggests central banks and large institutions (the "Smart Money") manipulate price action to create liquidity for their massive orders. Instead of using traditional indicators like RSI or MACD, SMC traders focus on reading the "footprints" these giants leave behind.
1. Market Structure: The Foundation
Before placing a trade, you must identify the market's direction using two key structural shifts:
BOS (Break of Structure): Occurs when the price continues the current trend by breaking the previous high (in an uptrend) or low (in a downtrend).
CHoCH (Change of Character): The first signal of a trend reversal. It happens when the price breaks the opposite structural level (e.g., price breaks a higher low in an uptrend), suggesting the "Smart Money" is flipping their bias.
2. Liquidity: The Market's Fuel
Big players cannot simply click "buy" for billions of dollars without moving the price against themselves. They need "Liquidity Pools"—areas where thousands of retail stop-losses are hidden—to fill their orders.
Liquidity Sweeps: You will often see the price "wick" just below a support level (grabbing stop-losses) before launching in the opposite direction. This is a "Stop Hunt," and SMC traders wait for this sweep before entering.
3. Order Blocks and Fair Value Gaps
Once liquidity is grabbed and the structure shifts (CHoCH), you look for two specific entries:
Order Blocks (OB): These are the specific candles where institutions placed their orders. They often act as "magnets" where the price returns to "mitigate" or pick up remaining orders before continuing the move.
Fair Value Gaps (FVG): These are "imbalances" or empty spaces left on a chart by a sudden, violent price move. The market has a natural tendency to return and "fill" these gaps.
4. The SMC Strategy in Practice
A typical SMC trade follows this sequence:
Analyze HTF (Higher Time Frame): Determine the overall bias on the 4H or Daily chart.
Wait for a Liquidity Sweep: Watch the price take out "Equal Highs" or "Equal Lows."
Confirm on LTF (Lower Time Frame): Look for a CHoCH on the 5m or 15m chart.
Enter at the OB/FVG: Set your entry at the Order Block that caused the shift, with a stop-loss just behind it.
