Lesson 5
Tool Lab: Categories + Narrative Tagging
Use CMC's Categories feature to identify token narratives, build theme-based watchlists, and avoid overconcentration in correlated sectors.
You're Not Diversified Just Because You Own 8 Tokens
Vikram owned BTC, ETH, SOL, AVAX, MATIC, ARB, OP, and ATOM. Eight different tokens. He thought he was well-diversified. Then the crypto market corrected 30% in a week, and all eight dropped between 25% and 45%.
Why? Because seven of his eight holdings were in the same category: Layer 1 and Layer 2 infrastructure. When that narrative fell out of favour, everything in it dropped together. Owning eight correlated assets isn't diversification — it's concentration with extra steps.
What Are Narratives in Crypto?
In the stock market, you have sectors: IT, banking, pharma, FMCG. When one sector falls, others might hold steady. Crypto has something similar called narratives — thematic categories that groups of tokens belong to.
Common narratives include:
- Layer 1s — Base blockchains (ETH, SOL, AVAX, SUI)
- Layer 2s — Scaling solutions (ARB, OP, MATIC, BASE)
- DeFi — Decentralised finance protocols (AAVE, UNI, CRV)
- AI/Compute — Decentralised AI and computation (RNDR, FET, TAO)
- Gaming/Metaverse — Blockchain games (AXS, IMX, GALA)
- Real World Assets (RWA) — Tokenised real-world assets (ONDO, MKR)
- Memecoins — Community-driven tokens (DOGE, SHIB, PEPE)
- Infrastructure — Oracles, storage, bridges (LINK, FIL, ATOM)
Tokens within the same narrative tend to move together. When AI tokens are hot, most AI tokens pump. When the narrative cools, they all drop — regardless of individual fundamentals.
How to Find Categories on CMC
CoinMarketCap has a Categories section that groups tokens by narrative. Every token page also shows tags — clickable labels like "DeFi," "Layer 1," "AI," "Gaming."
To use this:
- Open any token on CMC
- Look for the tags section (usually near the top or under the coin info)
- Click a tag to see all tokens in that category
- Note which categories your holdings fall into
If 70% of your portfolio is in one category, you're not diversified. You're making a concentrated bet on one narrative.
Building a Narrative Map of Your Portfolio
Take every token you own and write down its primary narrative:
| Token | Narrative |
|---|---|
| BTC | Store of Value |
| ETH | Layer 1 / DeFi Infrastructure |
| SOL | Layer 1 |
| LINK | Infrastructure (Oracle) |
| UNI | DeFi |
| RNDR | AI / Compute |
Now look at the distribution. If one narrative dominates, you know exactly where your concentration risk is. This isn't about selling everything — it's about knowing what bet you're actually making.
Using Narratives for Research
Narratives also help you find new projects to research:
- If you believe AI and crypto will converge, browse the AI category on CMC to find the top tokens by market cap in that space
- If you think real-world asset tokenisation will grow, look at the RWA category
- If a narrative is heating up (you see multiple tokens pumping), check the category page to understand what's driving it
The key insight: narratives cycle. DeFi Summer 2020, NFTs in 2021, AI tokens in 2024 — what's hot rotates. Understanding this helps you avoid chasing a narrative after it's already peaked.
Quick Recap
- Owning multiple tokens in the same category isn't diversification
- Crypto narratives (L1, DeFi, AI, Gaming, etc.) behave like stock market sectors
- Tokens within a narrative are highly correlated — they pump and dump together
- Use CMC's categories and tags to map your portfolio by narrative
- If one narrative dominates your portfolio, you have concentration risk
- Narratives cycle — today's hot sector is tomorrow's underperformer
Checklist
- Map every token in your watchlist to its primary narrative/category
- Check if more than 50% of your holdings fall into a single narrative
- Browse at least 2 CMC categories you haven't explored before
- Identify which narrative is currently "hot" — and check if you're late to it
Common Mistakes
- Thinking you're diversified because you own many different tokens — narrative correlation matters more than token count
- Chasing a narrative after it's already pumped 300% — the easy gains are over
- Ignoring narrative rotation — holding last cycle's winners while this cycle's narratives pass you by
- Not tagging your watchlist tokens by category, making it impossible to spot overconcentration
Key Takeaways from this Lesson
- 1Tokens in the same CMC category are highly correlated — not true diversification
- 2Narrative labeling reveals when your portfolio is concentrated in one story
- 3Maximum 40% in any single category to avoid correlated drawdowns
- 4Theme-based watchlists prepare you for narrative rotations before they happen
