Module 10 · Lesson 1 of 3
On-Chain 101: Flows and Profit-Taking
Understand what on-chain data is, why it cannot be faked, and which metrics matter most for Indian investors.
Goal
Understand why on-chain data is the most transparent source of market intelligence available: data written directly to the blockchain that no one can alter.
Mistake This Prevents
Making decisions based only on price charts while ignoring the movement of actual coins, which reveals what large holders are really doing.
Core Concepts
What Is On-Chain Data? Every Bitcoin and Ethereum transaction is recorded permanently on a public blockchain. On-chain analytics firms (Glassnode, CryptoQuant, IntoTheBlock) read this data and turn it into metrics.
Unlike price charts or social media, on-chain data cannot be faked, because it reflects actual movement of real coins.
Key On-Chain Metrics
| Metric | What It Measures |
|---|---|
| Exchange Inflows | Coins moving TO exchanges (often to sell) |
| Exchange Outflows | Coins moving FROM exchanges (often to hold) |
| HODL Waves | What % of supply was last moved X days ago |
| SOPR | Spent Output Profit Ratio: are sellers in profit? |
| NVT Ratio | Network Value to Transactions: is blockchain usage justified? |
| Active Addresses | Daily unique wallets transacting |
Exchange Flows: The Most Useful for Indian Traders
- High exchange inflows → holders sending coins to exchange → likely preparing to sell → bearish signal
- High exchange outflows → coins leaving exchanges → accumulation → bullish signal
- Sudden spike in inflows often precedes a dump within 24–48 hours
India Application Indian exchange wallet addresses are not tracked by Glassnode (India-specific exchanges lack on-chain transparency). Monitor global exchange flows as proxies for overall sentiment.
Real Example
May 2021: On-chain data showed a massive spike in BTC exchange inflows (hundreds of thousands of BTC moved to exchanges) in the days before BTC crashed from ₹42 lakh to ₹25 lakh. Traders who checked CryptoQuant had 24–48 hours warning.
Checklist
- Bookmark CryptoQuant (free tier) and check exchange flows weekly
- Note: are flows net inflow (bearish) or net outflow (bullish)?
- Combine with price direction for context
Common Mistakes
- Treating every exchange inflow spike as an immediate sell signal (large traders may be moving to sell stablecoins, not crypto)
- Ignoring on-chain entirely because it seems complex
- Using on-chain as a timing tool rather than a trend confirmation tool
Fedha Tool Tie-in
FedhaAcademy's On-Chain tab shows BTC and ETH exchange net flows with a rolling 7-day average. A "Accumulation" or "Distribution" label updates daily based on the net flow direction.
Key takeaways
What to remember
- On-chain data records actual coin movements, so it cannot be faked or manipulated.
- Exchange inflows often precede selling pressure; exchange outflows suggest accumulation.
- On-chain is a trend confirmation tool, not a precise timing signal.
- Combine on-chain with price action and derivatives for a complete picture.
