Module 11 · Lesson 2 of 3
Market Structure: Highs, Lows and Where Price Reacts
Master market structure analysis using higher highs, higher lows, lower highs, and lower lows to determine trend direction objectively.
Goal
Learn to read market structure (HH/HL and LH/LL) so you can determine trend direction objectively without relying on feelings or indicators.
Mistake This Prevents
Calling a market "bullish" because it recently pumped 20%, while ignoring that the structure still shows lower highs, which means the downtrend is technically intact.
Core Concepts
The Four Structure Points
- HH (Higher High): A swing high that is higher than the previous swing high
- HL (Higher Low): A swing low that is higher than the previous swing low
- LH (Lower High): A swing high that is lower than the previous swing high
- LL (Lower Low): A swing low that is lower than the previous swing low
Trend Identification
- Uptrend: Sequence of HH and HL, where each new high is higher and each new low is higher
- Downtrend: Sequence of LH and LL, where each new high is lower and each new low is lower
- Ranging: No clear sequence, alternating between HH/LL and LH/HL
Break of Structure (BOS) A significant structural signal:
- In an uptrend: price breaks below the most recent HL → potential trend change
- In a downtrend: price breaks above the most recent LH → potential trend change
- A BOS does not automatically mean trend reversal. It is a warning that structure is changing
Change of Character (CHoCH)
- More significant than BOS
- In an uptrend: price breaks below the most recent HL and sets a new LL → trend changed to bearish
- Wait for confirmation before acting on CHoCH
How to Mark Structure on TradingView
- Identify all significant swing highs and lows on the daily chart
- Label each: HH, HL, LH, or LL
- Draw arrows connecting them to visualise the sequence
- Identify the current sequence and the most recent structural point
Real Example
BTC November 2023 – January 2024:
- November: HL formed at ₹28L (previous low was ₹24L) → structure shifting bullish
- December: HH at ₹35L (previous high was ₹31L) → uptrend confirmed
- January 2024: HL at ₹38L → uptrend intact Each HL held, so a trader using structure analysis stayed long throughout without needing any other indicator.
Checklist
- Label at least 3 recent swing highs and lows on the daily chart
- Identify the current sequence (HH/HL, LH/LL, or ranging)
- Mark the most recent structural point, because a break here is your warning signal
Common Mistakes
- Labelling every minor candlestick swing (daily chart swings only for swing trades)
- Calling an uptrend after a single HH without confirming HL
- Missing the first HL after a downtrend (the most important structural change signal)
Fedha Tool Tie-in
FedhaAcademy's Structure Analyser auto-labels swing points on daily and weekly charts. A "Structure Alert" notification is sent when a BOS or CHoCH is detected on BTC or ETH.
Key takeaways
What to remember
- Uptrend = HH + HL; Downtrend = LH + LL; objective structural rules remove emotional bias.
- A Break of Structure (BOS) below a HL in an uptrend is the first warning of trend change.
- Wait for a Change of Character (CHoCH: HL broken + new LL) before calling a trend reversal.
- Use daily chart swings for swing trading structure; ignore minor intraday fluctuations.
Quiz
Question 1 of 6BTC has been making HH and HL for 8 weeks. Price then drops below the most recent HL. This is:
