From FOMO to Framework: A Retail Trader’s Survival Journey in Crypto : Phase 3
3 min read16 January 202637 reads
Phase 2 Recap (For Phase 3 Intro)
Phase 2 was not about making money. It was about survival.
The 2022 bear market exposed every mistake from Phase 1. Prices kept falling, narratives collapsed, and the pressure of a personal loan turned market losses into real-life stress. With no capital left and no mental bandwidth, I stepped away from charts for months—not out of discipline, but out of necessity.
This phase forced hard decisions:
Accepting that some bags were dead
Exiting old-cycle coins at small losses
Rotating capital instead of waiting on hope
Moving away from Indian exchanges after understanding exchange risk
Prioritizing security and capital protection over growth
Phase 2 stripped away ego and illusions.
It taught me that cash is a position, survival is a strategy, and protecting capital matters more than being right.

Phase 3: The Learning Curve & the Futures “Reality Check” (2023–2024)
Portfolio Rebuilding: Old Bags vs New Narratives
After moving to international exchanges, you finally made a structurally correct decision.
The market had clearly shifted:
Old-cycle coins = heavy, slow, exhausted narratives
New-cycle coins = fresh tech, fresh liquidity, fresh attention
You positioned into newer narratives like SUI, SEI, and ONDO.
Your spot portfolio began growing 10% → 30–40%.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth you couldn’t escape:
You were still net negative overall, because the damage from Phase 1 and Phase 2 was too deep.
The recovery was real—but slow.
And patience has never been your natural strength.
⚠️ Mistake Highlight – Phase 3
Mistake #1: Calling Spot “Too Slow”
You underestimated spot recovery because it didn’t give dopamine.
Lesson Learned:
Spot doesn’t make you rich fast.
Spot repairs capital.
And damaged capital needs time, not shortcuts.
The YouTube Trap & the Futures Double-Zero
Then YouTube did what it does best—sell dreams to insecure traders.
Everywhere you looked:
“High leverage”
“Daily income”
“Small capital to big money”
You convinced yourself:
“I’ll just build some quick capital with futures, then spot will be easy.”
This is where Phase 3 punched you in the face.
The First $100
No system
No risk management
Pure luck
Result?
👉 Account wiped in one week. ZERO.
The “I’ve Learned Something” Phase
You studied a bit
Deposited again
Traded for a month
Even made some profits
Then one day:
Sudden wick
Liquidity sweep
Market spike
Profit + capital = ZERO again.
The market didn’t scream.
It calmly told you:
“You don’t belong here yet.”
Mistake #2: Trading Futures Without a System
You thought you were trading.
You were actually gambling with charts.
Lesson Learned:
Futures without rules don’t kill you fast.
They kill you slowly, so you suffer more.
One thing you did right (rare win):
👉 You never touched your spot holdings in the hardware wallet.
If you had, your journey would’ve ended right there.
Mentorship: Where Real Education Started
After getting wiped twice, your ego finally cracked.
You made one correct decision:
“No more guesses. Only structure.”
You filtered YouTube noise and started learning from real educators:
Crypto India (Aady Bhai)
Crypto Jargon (Neel Bhai)
Crypto Point Hindi (Sandy Bhai)
The Block Vlog (Laxman Bhai)
Cult Trading (Suraj Bhai)
X (Space Live) by Himanshu Bhai
This is where your mindset shifted from retail thinking to professional observation.
Technical Maturity: How You Started Seeing Charts Differently
You stopped being obsessed with candles.
You started reading context.
What you learned:
Support & Resistance
→ Properly marked levels work 70–80% of the timeRange Trading & Fibonacci
→ Where accumulation happens, where reversals beginLiquidity Heatmaps
→ The real game
→ Not “where price is,” but why price will move
You stopped watching candles.
You started watching liquidity.
Not retail reactions—whale footprints.
Mistake #3: Confusing Knowledge with Confidence
Technically, you were finally strong.
Psychologically, you were still damaged.
Old futures losses and the personal loan trauma had killed your confidence.
Lesson Learned:
The market isn’t always the enemy.
Sometimes your own unhealed history is.
Phase 3 Summary: Necessary Damage
Phase 3 taught you three non-negotiable truths:
1. Narratives rotate—adapt or bleed
2. Futures is a profession, not a shortcut
3. Technical knowledge without psychology is incomplete
